How much do we spend on healthcare?

Submitted to Healthcare costs

In 2021, health spending reached $308 billion – that’s $8,019 per Canadian!
How is that money spent?
Our “free” healthcare is largely funded by taxpayers. Prescription drugs, long-term care, and in-home care are funded through combinations of intergovernmental and/or private and public financial arrangements.

Over half of total health expenses fund our hospitals (25%), drugs (14%) and physicians (13%).

Not surprisingly, spending increased by 12.8% in 2020 due to the pandemic. While COVID related spending may now slow, the level of health spending will likely rise due to surging government deficits, surgery backlogs, a diminishing healthcare workforce, and an aging population.
